Tolkien reconciled this inconsistency in a later edition by creating two Thr醝ns : ( 1 ) Thr醝n I, the ancient King under the Mountain, named on the map and ( 2 ) Thr醝n II, the son of Thr髍 and father of Thorin, and a possessor of the map.Thorin was mortally wounded in this battle, and after his death and the extinction of the main branch of Durin's line, D醝n succeeded Thorin as King under the Mountain and King of Durin's folk, the first not in the direct line of Durin. The Kingdom under the Mountain was founded by Thr醝n I the Old, who discovered the dragons plundered their hoards, the Longbeards, led now by Thr髍, a descendant of Thorin, returned to Erebor to take up the title King under the Mountain. It's difficult to see king under the mountain in a sentence. In the confusion, the map that he produced for " The Hobbit " contained text naming Thrain as " King under the Mountain ", but Thorin's grandfather was the last King under the Mountain. As he was by right of birth the king of Erebor following the death of his father Thr醝n, he was "' King under the Mountain "'in exile until Smaug was destroyed.Thr醝n " preceded " the map and its maker ( Thr髍 ). The map notes that Thr醝n had been King under the Mountain in the olden days : i.On the journey the company encountered a band of Lake-town and marched right up to the leaders of the town, declaring himself as King Under the Mountain. However, at the Lonely Mountain, Bard discovers that Thorin Oakenshield, King under the Mountain, is very much alive, along with all his companions.Thorin, F韑i and K韑i are respectfully laid to rest and D醝n is crowned King under the Mountain. After the death of Thorin in the Battle of Five Armies, Dain becomes King under the Mountain.
